DIGITAL HEALTH ANXIETY
The Rise of ‘Dr Google’ and AI
‘Dr Google’ is now one of the most consulted ‘doctors’ in the world – followed closely by AI tools.
Before many patients see a GP, they have often already researched their symptoms and arrived at a conclusion that is not always accurate. The internet has made medical information incredibly accessible, and in many ways, this is positive. Patients today are more informed, more engaged, and more proactive about their health than they have ever been.
The challenge is that medical information without context can be misleading, and this often leads to unnecessary anxiety and over-investigation.
A simple headache can quickly appear serious.
Fatigue may seem alarming.
A rash can be misinterpreted.
Medicine is rarely about one symptom and one answer. It requires clinical experience, careful assessment, probability-based thinking, and understanding the individual sitting in front of you.
One of the most important questions we ask in clinic is, ‘What’s worrying you?’ That question often reveals the real concern behind the search.
Using online resources can be helpful, but they work best when followed by a conversation with a qualified doctor.
Search engines list possibilities, experienced clinicians determine what truly matters. No AI can beat that human touch.
